May’s Pot of the Month is this crinkle edged pin tray on blue coral legs. Measuring 3”/76mm in diameter, this piece bears the Arms of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Nothing particularly remarkable about that, we hear you say. Well just look on the bottom, and you will see that it commemorates the Queens Visit to Derby on May 21st, 1891, which makes it a great deal more interesting. The Queen made a state visit to Derby to lay the foundation stone of the new Infirmary, subsequently known as the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. The D.R.I gave great service to generations of Derbyshire people until it’s closure and subsequent demolition in 2015. The moral here has to be: always check the bottom of Goss pieces, you never know what you might find!
